BRAHMS - Intermezzo Op. 118 no. 2

Updated: Dec 21, 2022

Yeah, this is among the most magical pieces ever written for solo piano! It has such a rare intimate mood which is only found in Brahms own Op. 5 Andante espressivo, two works written in opposite years of his life. But beware of the big line! Expressivity must never lead to broken continuity. Each phrase goes to another, and another, and each section goes to another. Music is a non-stop thing. Find a single tempo for the whole piece (it is Andante, not largo or lento!). Does not break it in the middle section, as if it were a random theme that came from nowhere. There's that "più lento" passage, right? It means the outter sections must sound faster than that.
